Warming Up Before Grabbing Your Sticks

Have you ever wanted a fast and effective way to get your body loose before you start playing? I know that my playing feels much better when my body is nimble and ready to respond.

You might not know, but my *other* hobby is Olympic-style weightlifting. That means my body HURTS all the time. It's a constant battle to keep it relaxed. In my sport, if you're not getting looser, you're getting tighter.

Even if you're not an extreme athlete, maintaining flexibility can save you from developing health problems drummers deal with - back pain, neck stiffness, wrist tension, and even headache.

This video is stolen from one of the leading Olympic lifting gyms in the United States, Catalyst Athletics. Although it may look daunting, I promise this won't take more than ten minutes, and you'll feel much better. I have started doing this right when I wake up, before I train, and also before I lift. Give it a try!

And, here's a video of Greg Everett performing a snatch. This is what the warmup above was intended for.
