Terry Bozzio: Musical Solo Drumming
If you're like me, then you are fascinated by complex drum orchestrations, lengthy solos, tough ostinatos, and HUGE drum sets. If you're like me, you'll love Terry Bozzio: Musical Solo Drumming.
In this DVD, Bozzio alternates between playing solos and explaining the theory behind is improvisational compositions. While the DVD is worth the purchase just to see Bozzio play for a few hours, the real gold is nestled within his philosophy of drumming. Not only does he go over the nuts-and-bolts of the orchestrations, ostinatos, and techniques he uses for the solo material, he also explains his approach towards improvisation. It's in these conversations that we get to dive into the mind of the great Terry Bozzio. He discusses improvisation in context of playing with other musicians, and in a solo context.
I was really excited to hear Bozzio discuss the importance of understanding music theory from many perspectives. Not only does he suggest studying many styles of drumming, but he also states that understanding Western classical music is very important, as well. Another outstanding gem is his advice to always work within your realm of capability while you are performing.
In this DVD, you'll also find an explanation of his warm up routine, a tour of his amazing drum set (the largest in the world), and obviously lots of great solo material from the master himself.
My only disappointment was that the DVD does not include a poster of Bozzio's amazing drum set.
