TableDrum: Drum with Your iPhone
I recently recieved a message from Emanuel Dohi, a reader whose company - Dohi Sweden - has created a fantastic iPhone application called TableDrum. So, we decided to publish an interview about the software. The idea is that you play any variety of surfaces with your hands, your iPhone "hears them," and then awesome drum sounds are triggered! Check out the video:
If you are looking for a way to jam out on the go, TableDrum is DEFINITELY for you. I find myself tapping, pumping, and jiving all over the place. I usually just get confused looks as people flee away from my madness. However, with TableDrum, I can show them that I'm a real musician! Awesome!
Here is the question/answer session with Emaneul Dohi, Creative Director at Dohi Sweden.
What inspired TableDrum?
When the iPhone came it was all about multi-touch, video and Internet communication. We wanted to do something else, so we thought for a while on other approaches to the iPhone. Then it struck us, no one had really done anything that out-of-the-box with sound input. So, we started thinking about developing a sound classification library to be able to map different sounds, and somewhere around that time sprung the idea of TableDrum. We felt that the idea was something that really aligned with our motto, vujá de - the ability to see something new in something all ready experienced a thousand times before.
Tell me about the development of your company, Dohi Entertainment.
The company was founded in late 2009 and focuses on products and software in the audiovisual sector. We develop our own games and products in our entertainment branch, but we are also helping out clients with development on the latest platforms and marketing through the latest tech. You could call it a digital creative agency, a mix between a marketing firm and a tech lab.
We are a team of really talented programmers, designers and artists. When I started the company i wanted to build a competence base so that we could realize even the most crazy ideas and take them out on the market. Today we are 20 people and growing, each with a unique set of skills.
Are you a musician?
I am no musical virtuoso, but i love music and have played a fair share of instruments, mainly guitar! I think, for the team overall, that there is a genuine interest for music. Most of us have played some instrument and we have a couple of staffmembers that work as DJs on the side.
As of now, it’s not far off to say that we are professional table drummers, all though we try to minimize unnecessary table drumming at the office for the sake of peace!
Are there any plans for new releases?
We don’t want to go into any specific details at this point. But, of course, the tale of TableDrum will not end here.
Keep us updated and be sure to keep the beats dropping heavy!
