Gary Novak Videos
I really don't have much to say here, other than that Gary Novak is an absolute master drummer. His playing is powerful, energetic, and rigorous. In fact, he is the only drummer that even vaguely reminds me of Vinnie Colaiuta.
For those of us who really love fusion music, it's easy to see the unique contribution Novak has made. Simply glancing at the lineup of musicians he plays with in these videos gives perspective on the quality of his playing - even if you've never heard of him. Big names like Eric Marienthal, Chick Corea, Allan Holdsworth, Mike Miller, Micheal Landau, Steve Tavaglione, John Patitucci, and many more stand out on Gary Novak's Drummerworld profile.
Here I present my first collection of videos of Gary Novak. Many of these I have watched repeatedly for several months and just love them more and more every time. Most of you already know that I do not post low quality videos UNLESS there is some really, really rare or outstanding footage to be shown. Unfortunately, I am having a very hard time finding high quality footage of Gary Novak. So, please, if you know of any, leave a comment!!!
Gary Novak with Allan Holdsworth and Dave Carpenter
This video is dark, ephemeral, and intense. Unfortunately, the bass guitar is very hard to hear, but you can tell that Novak and Carpenter really give Holdsworth the freedom he deserves during the tune. In fact, Holdsworth's playing in this video is unlike anything I've ever seen.
Chick Corea, Gary Novak, Mike Miller, Eric Marienthal, Jimmy Earl: "Space" Live
The energy here is unreal. We get a full flavor, uncensored Corea jazz organ nerd-blast followed by the ultra-shred madness of Mike Miller. Be prepared to repeat the Chick Corea lick at 3:48 several times, because your mind is going to melt. My favorite portion, however, is the passionate Eric Marienthal solo, which continues into part two:
Chick Corea, Gary Novak, Mike Miller, Eric Marienthal, Jimmy Earl: "Space" Live Part II
I have to say, though, that Jimmy Earl's bass playing is absolutely incredible throughout. There must be something about Novak's playing that gives bass players a lot of wiggle room while still maintaining support for the soloists.
Renegade Creation Video Featuring Michael Landau, Robben Ford, Jimmy Haslip, and Gary Novak
I really love the guitar playing of Michael Landau. When I heard that he had a project involving Gary Novak, I was very excited. This displays some of Novak's more recent playing. Again, I apologize for the low quality footage - but sometimes we have to take what we can.
Finally, I want to share the lesson series made by Joe Crabtree: Learn a Gary Novak Solo. Joe's meticulous three part, multi-hour video lesson series analyzes the Gary Novak solo from the Lyle Workman album "Harmonic Crusader." Gary Novak plays on the track "Nothing Left Unsaid" which you can hear at Lyle Workman's homepage. This album is incredible and also features Simon Phillips and Vinnie Colaiuta. You can click the link below to buy the MP3 album.
