Claus Hessler: Drumming Kairos
Claus Hessler is releasing his first DVD "Drumming Kairos". This has been a long time coming and I'm very excited to see what he brings into my practice routine this time around.
There is no denying it. Claus Hessler's methods work very well. it's clear to see his improvement over the last few years as new footage is released. Even 10 years ago, his playing was absolutely mind boggling - a truly elite drummer. Using his advanced practice methodologies presented in his recent books "Open Handed Playing Volume II" and "The Daily Drum Set Workout", Hessler has pushed his playing to a new level. Here is the proof:
It is truly inspiring to see such an amazing musician present an organized, coherent, and proven method for technical drum set development. Perhaps the only thing more amazing than his playing is his conceptual understanding of technical skill development, and the ability to communicate that to others with his books (and now a DVD).
Personally, I know that "Open Handed Playing Volume 1" has been some of the most challenging material I have worked with. However, the results were astounding, and I stuck with the system for over a year (back in 2009-2010). Even then, I recognized the importance of daily practice with this kind of material. But, recently, Claus has really pushed this concept in his book "The Daily Drum Set Workout" (more on that in a future post).
Studying footage from the internet has been helpful, but I am very excited to see Hessler break down his advanced Moeller technique on DVD. Judging by his previous books, I'm confident "Drumming Kairos" will push my playing even further into the future of drumming.
I now own a copy of the DVD and have been working the material for a few weeks. Even if you are already using his books - especially if you are - then this DVD is a must-have. It is, by far, the most clear and thorough explanation of Moeller technique available. The camera angles are phenomenal, and Hessler explains many advanced Moeller methods which I had never utilized. This is the only DVD I'm aware of that covers starting with the up-stroke (which is KEY), fast groups of 4, and interlaced accent patterns using the whip. He also discusses advanced concepts which involve replacing phrases with accented rudiment patterns, the importance of posture, and *how* to practice efficiently. It also features an enormous ebook (over 100 pages) with new material and highlights from his previous publications. Plus, you get to see Claus perform some amazing pieces which will blow your mind.
